The Effects of Hormones and Puberty Blockers on Prepubescent Transgender Kids

Most of us have always known what gender we are throughout our lives. However, for a growing number of people a disorder known as Gender Dysphoria, or being assigned the wrong gender at birth blurs the lines as to whether or not the transgender child believes he is born a male with female parts or a female with male parts. 

in children, gender dysmorphia is a most difficult and confusing state of life. To complicate matters the transgender kid without question becomes the victim of bullying most severely while he or she is growing up. High degrees of suicide rates in dysmorphic teens is all too much of a reality in this day and age 

Many times when a young man or young woman realizes he or she was assigned the wrong gender at birth they are only a couple of years old. This is many years before the onset of puberty. If the child is open with his or hers parents or guardian then the adult or adults supervising them could sit down with a psychiatrist or case manager and the child and mental health practitioner could decide the best course of action to take that is in the best interest of the child. Should what is known as top and bottom surgery be opted for, or also known as in girls or would be giving the boys puberty blockers by the age of 10 with a heavy dose of female hormones to induce breast growth & bottom surgery in either gender upon the age of 18 or older remove the natural given genitalia and replace it with genitalia to match up with the.young adults real, actual gender in keeping with their natural instincts and choices. Should gender reassignment surgery be the choice alternative then puberty blockers and hormones always must be administered. 

This, of course, has major ramifications on the body. 

The benefits of puberty blockers are that that they can be lifesaving.(1) The reasononing is as follows:

If a person is really a girl who is assigned male at birth and she and her family decide on top and bottom surgery then the puberty blockers can be administered before the onset of puberty which by the time a girl is administered the female hormones which would be around the time of the male blockers she would start developing her figure and breasts and she could develop then into the young woman she was meant to develop into instead of becoming a man of which nature did not intend for her to turn into.(2) of course puberty blockers has its critics.

     It is also believed by some that puberty blockers cause not only mental illness but physical harm as well. Such damaging side effects while on Lupron are osteoporosis, mood disorders, seizures, cognitive impairment and when combined with cross six hormones, sterility (4).      There are differing viewpoints on this very controversial subject. Each case must be considered individually on a case by case basis.
